At Cruelty Free Consumer, we deeply value compassion and heroism, which is why the Michigan War Dog Memorial holds a special place in our hearts. This incredible memorial pays tribute to the military working dogs who served with valor, particularly during the Vietnam War, reflecting our commitment to respecting and cherishing all animals.
To delve deeper into the story behind this remarkable memorial, we had the privilege of speaking with Phil Weitlauf, the founder of the Michigan War Dog Memorial. His dedication and passion for honoring these heroic animals have shaped the memorial into what it is today.
What inspired you to restore the Michigan War Dog Memorial, and what was the journey like?
Phil: I had heard about an abandoned war dog memorial buried deep in the woods and felt compelled to honor these brave animals. When I finally found the overgrown memorial, it was a neglected tribute to Sgt Sparks, a US Marine Corps dog who served in four major WWII campaigns. I couldn’t stand to see it in such a state, so I rallied a group of veterans, K-9 supporters, and local volunteers. Together, we began the monumental task of restoring the memorial. What started as a personal mission soon blossomed into a significant project, reflecting my dedication to honoring the service and sacrifice of military and service dogs.
What is the overall vision for the memorial, and how do you see it evolving in the future?
Phil: Since the government will not allow military dogs in their national cemeteries, we decided to give them a place right here in Michigan to be honored for their service and sacrifices. We’ve also extended this honor to law enforcement K9s in Michigan. Since our first ceremonial burial for MWD Buddy, we have honored over 4,500 K9 heroes, either with their names on a memorial wall or through actual burials. As for the future, I’m currently mentoring the next generation to take over the Michigan War Dog Memorial (MWDM) when I retire. The MWDM will continue for many years to come.
Can you share some of the most rewarding moments or milestones in the journey of creating this memorial?
Phil: One of the most memorable rewards was erecting the Vietnam K9 Memorial Wall, which bears the names and tattoo numbers of 4,234 military dogs. All military dogs are tattooed in their left ear. During the dedication in 2017, over 45 Vietnam dog handlers traveled from all over the United States to be here. After the ceremony, they all rushed to the wall to find their dog. Many said that after 55 years, their dogs were finally recognized. It was an incredibly emotional day for them.
How do you hope this memorial will impact the community and the families of war dogs?
Phil: We have full support from the community. As for the war dog families, we are the only war dog memorial and cemetery that conducts this type of ceremony for these well-trained and loyal K9s. Since we started videoing our burial procedures and posting them on YouTube, war dogs have been coming to us from all over the United States—from California, Texas, Louisiana, New Jersey, Maryland, Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, and beyond.
Have you received any feedback or stories from visitors that have particularly resonated with you?
Phil:The handlers are always so appreciative and tell us each time we inter their battle buddy. Their gratitude is incredibly moving.
What are some lesser-known facts about war dogs that you think people should be aware of?
Phil: War dogs are still classified as equipment while on duty, which is wrong. They should be recognized as “Canine Members of the Armed Forces.” We, along with other war dog groups, are working to change this with the government. Additionally, these dogs receive no health benefits once they leave the military, which is another issue we’re fighting to address.
What are your personal experiences or connections with war dogs that you’d like to share?
Phil: I wasn’t a handler when I served, but I have a deep love for the German Shepherd breed and how they’re trained to save lives on the battlefield. This love and respect drive my dedication to the Michigan War Dog Memorial.
How can people support the memorial and the cause of war dogs more broadly?
Phil: From the start, we agreed we would not charge handlers for the interment of their partners. It costs us $1,000 for each dog we bury, so funding is the biggest way the general public can help us. Donations are crucial to keeping the memorial running and ensuring that these heroic dogs receive the honor they deserve.
A Place of Honor and Reflection
The Michigan War Dog Memorial is more than just a site of remembrance; it’s a living tribute to the dedicated service of these dogs. The memorial’s mission extends to maintaining a park-like setting for the interment of retired military and service dogs. This includes providing interment with full honors at no cost to the handler or owner, supported entirely by private and corporate donations.
Recently, the memorial has expanded its scope to honor not only military dogs but also service horses. This new initiative includes a dedicated memorial wall for the horses, which will be interred alongside their canine counterparts. The inclusion of these horses shows the memorial’s commitment to recognizing the contributions of all service animals. The new horse initiative will be launching this fall.
